Feofaaki Paongo had been a fixture around the Virgin Valley football program.
His son, Junior Paongo, delivered a performance Saturday night in honor of his late father that will be long cherished in Mesquite.
Junior Paongo rushed for 143 yards and four touchdowns by halftime on the day of his father’s funeral to power the Bulldogs to a 54-18 home win over Sunrise Mountain.
Feofaaki Paongo recently died of a heart attack, Bulldogs coach Yori Ludvigson said.
“It was an emotional day,” Ludvigson said. “They had the funeral today, and they had a tribute at halftime for (Junior’s) dad.
“Man, (Junior) played hard tonight. Great kid, great family.”
Virgin Valley improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Division I-A Sunrise play, while Sunrise Mountain dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.
