The Bishop Gorman High football team reclaimed its spot today as the nation’s No. 1 team in the USA Today Super 25 Expert Rankings.

The Gaels (6-0) beat then-No. 1 St. John Bosco of California last week 34-31 in an ESPN-televised game, moving up one spot in the rankings after putting on a show for a national audience. Gorman led 34-10 midway through the third quarter to build its resume for the mythical national championship.

Gorman opened the season at No. 1 but was dropped a slot after just winning in overtime Sept. 5 against Bingham of Utah.

Gorman, which beat six respected out-of-state teams in consecutive weeks to open the season, begins league play Thursday by hosting Shadow Ridge.

The Gaels haven’t lost to a Nevada opponent since 2008. If they run the table again this fall, the Gaels could potentially become the national champs. That title, of course, won’t be won on the field — it’s determined by journalist voters.

Also today, Gorman sophomore quarterback Tate Martell was named the U.S. Army Player of the Week. Martell was brilliant in the win against St. John Bosco, passing for 230 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for another score.

Martell has been a difference-maker since becoming Gorman’s full-time quarterback midway through its Aug. 29 game against Servite. He has passed for about 1,010 yards and 13 touchdowns.
