letter to the editor:

Politicians, money and environment

I am truly dismayed by the mostly Republican House of Representatives, which recently approved a bill that enables the pollution of rivers, streams and wetlands by business and other interests.

Rivers, streams and wetlands provide drinking water for humans and animals. They are habitat for countless species of wildlife. It is wrong to destroy our environment simply because businesses do not care enough to invest money to safely and properly dispose of their waste, which is often harmful to animals and people.

We need people in government who care about preserving the health of our planet and all its inhabitants instead of those who routinely kowtow to mercenary interests.

I wish more people of conscience were elected to public office, but unfortunately, too many politicians are elected because they are backed by wealthy special interests that pour millions of dollars into their candidates’ campaigns. Then these paid-for politicians vote as their benefactors dictate.

We need to eliminate the influence of so much money and privilege over politics before the damage done to our planet by these interests and their servile politicians is irreversible.

I won’t hold my breath waiting for that time to come.
