2 children killed in minivan fire in east valley

Updated Sunday, April 5, 2015 | 4:17 p.m.

Two small children died Saturday evening in a minivan fire at an apartment complex in the east Las Vegas Valley.

Police responded to reports of a burning vehicle at 5:55 p.m. at the Arcadia Palms Apartments, 3655 E. Sahara Ave., near U.S. 95.

Officers found Clark County firefighters on scene with the fire mostly extinguished, Metro Police Lt. Ken Romane said.

The preliminary investigation revealed that four children were playing in and around the vehicle when one of them accidentally set a fire inside the van. Two of the four children were able to escape unharmed, but two were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Firefighters told officers the two small children were discovered dead in the minivan.

Arson investigators with the fire department are working with Metro homicide detectives to determine the cause and circumstances of the blaze, Romane said. Due to the age of the juvenile who started the fire, no charges will be filed.

The fire appears to be accidental.
