State prison inmate collects unemployment behind bars

CARSON CITY — A state prison inmate was able to collect $4,450 in unemployment compensation, Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt said today.

Todd Allan Schwarting, 40, of Las Vegas pleaded guilty last week to unemployment fraud and will face a five year term and a $10,000 penalty when sentenced May 20, officials said.

Laxalt said Schwarting, in prison for attempted lewdness with a child under 14 and burglary, told the state in 2011 and 2012 that he was willing and available to work.

Laxalt said his office will prosecute insurance fraud no matter where it happens.
