Pitching prospect Steven Matz solid in debut, but 51s drop opener at Fresno

The Las Vegas 51s were limited to two hits today at the Fresno Grizzlies in a 2-1 defeat to open the Triple-A season.

Top pitching prospect Steven Matz was solid in his Las Vegas debut, striking out four batters and yielding three hits in 5 and 1/3 innings of work.

Eric Campbell and Johnny Monell had singles to open the seventh inning for Las Vegas for the lone hits of the night. Campbell scored on a double play.

Fresno, the top minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros, scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on Matt Dominguez’s run-scoring single.

The four-game series to start the season continues at 7:05 p.m. Friday. The 51s’ opener at Cashman Field is April 17, also against Fresno.
