Gary Gray, husband of Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani, died of multiple blunt force chest injuries in a head-on crash Thursday on Kyle Canyon Road, about two miles west of U.S. 95, Clark County and Nevada Highway Patrol officials said.

Gray, 69, was driving a red Ford Ranger pickup east on State Route 157 near mile marker 18 when the truck crossed into the westbound lane and struck a white, four-door Jeep, Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said.

The crash was reported about 1:30 p.m., Hixson said.

Gray was airlifted to University Medical Center, and he was later pronounced dead, Clark County spokesman Erik Pappa said in a statement.

The Clark County Coroner's Office ruled his death an accident.

The 50-year-old man driving the Jeep was transported by ambulance to UMC and is now in stable condition, Hixson said.

NHP said this was the Southern Command's 18th fatal collision this year.

“The entire county family is deeply saddened by the news of Gary’s passing,” Clark County Manager Don Burnette said in the county's statement.

Gray, a political consultant, was alone in the vehicle, Pappa said.

An investigation into why the pickup traveled into the westbound lanes is ongoing, Hixson said.

Giunchigliani and Gray married in 1987, according to Giunchigliani's website.

A devoted traveler, Gray shared pictures and stories of his trips on his website.

His love of travel led him to journey to each of the seven continents, according to the site.

"It’s about getting out there, exploring the new, opening fresh vistas, and building a lifetime of memories. In both subtle and obvious ways, travel has changed my life for the good," he said in a post.

Political figures spoke out on Gray's death today, sending their condolences to his wife.

"If anyone ever lived life to the fullest, it was Gary Gray. What a sad day," Democratic state Sen. Tick Segerblom said on Twitter.

Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., also took to Twitter to comment on Gray's passing.

"I'm deeply saddened about the passing of my friend Gary Gray," she said. "He was a loving husband to Chris, a brilliant mind, and a brave adventurer," she said.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., called Gray "one of the great political minds in Nevada history."

"Gary and Chris were a team and their passion for causes they believed in has made Nevada a better place to live," he said in a statement. "I am saddened by this shocking news and my thoughts are with Chris."
