Summit View Youth Correctional Center

CARSON CITY — A legislative committee today approved $674,000 to rehabilitate the closed Summit View Youth Correctional Center in Las Vegas.

Amber Howell, administrator of the state Division of Child and Family Services, told the Interim Finance Committee, that plans call for the reopening the facility in September. The state will run the center, which has beds for 96 juvenile offenders.

Howell told the committee cell windows are broken, the floor in the gym is buckling and fresh paint is needed.

The Clark County School District has agreed to provide educational programs when the center reopens, Howell said.

The facility was closed in March after the state voided a contract with Rite of Passage to operate the facility.

A legislative audit found the center, called the Red Rock Academy at the time, did not adequately protect the health, safety and welfare of detainees and failed to protect their civil rights.
