Four Henderson Police officers have been cleared in the shooting death of a gunman who wounded an officer during a confrontation last year, the Clark County District Attorney’s Office reported today.

It appears the man may have been trying to provoke police to shoot him, officials said.

After reports of gunshots on June 11, officers confronted Ryan Marone at a house in the 400 block of Flat Plains Avenue, according to the report.

Marone came out of the house with a handgun and confronted officers, refusing commands to drop his weapon, the report said.

He walked to the end of the driveway holding the gun behind his head, aimed it at two officers behind a utility truck and fired, striking one of the officers in the hip, the report said.

Four officers, including the injured officer, returned fire, striking Marone, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, the report said.

A toxicology report showed Marone had high levels of methamphetamine and hydrocodone in his system, and his blood-alcohol level was .114 percent. The legal limit to drive is .08 percent.

Additionally, his wife had recently left him, taking their only daughter and moving out of state after a reported domestic violence incident, the report said.

“Tragically, based on conversations with the family of Mr. Marone, and Mr. Marone’s actions, it would seem that he may have wanted police to kill him,” District Attorney Steve Wolfson said in a statement. “The term ‘suicide by cop’ was referenced in more than one of the interviews with those who knew him best.”
