letter to the editor:

Use trash bins in our parks

My husband and I walked at Sunset Park recently and as we always do, picking up fishing line and getting as many plastic bags out of the lake as we could reach.

People almost demand a beautiful park to have their picnics and peaceful walks in but neglect to realize that the inhabitants of their park, the wildlife, are affected by humans’ misuse. People love to bring bread, etc., in plastic bags to feed these wild animals, and the birds become used to it — not good. The sad thing is, humans also leave their trash behind as opposed to using the many garbage containers located around the park, and the wild birds are the ones that suffer. We found a beautiful duck who tried to find out what was in a bag left in the lake; once inside, he couldn’t get out, thus drowning.

We realize it was windy and accidents happen, but as responsible humans we should know enough to batten down the hatches and make sure everything is secure. As Pogo once said, “We have met the enemy and he is us.” Please have respect in all the parks and in our valley; use trash bins.
