Las Vegas City Councilman Stavros Anthony lost his campaign for mayor against incumbent Carolyn Goodman last week, and today he lost his post as her second-in-command on the council.

After briefly thanking Anthony for his service as mayor pro tem, Goodman recommended at today’s council meeting that Councilman Steve Ross be named to the post.

The motion passed unanimously.

The position is largely ceremonial. The mayor pro tem’s biggest responsibility is to run council meetings when the mayor is absent or unable to vote on an item because of a conflict of interest.

Anthony was chosen for the position shortly after Goodman was elected to her first term as mayor in 2011. The two had worked closely together until last year, when they split on a controversial plan for downtown stadium that included more than $100 million of city funding and land.

Anthony, who opposed the stadium, launched a run for mayor earlier this year and targeted Goodman for her support of the project in a campaign that saw both sides trading pointed attacks.

Ross voted in favor of the stadium project and supported Goodman throughout her re-election campaign.

Goodman ultimately prevailed, winning 55 percent of the vote in last week’s primary election compared to Anthony’s 42 percent.
