Former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian’s grandson, 5, suffers stroke

A 5-year-old boy from one of Las Vegas' most prominent families has suffered a stroke, according to his parents.

The child, Jerry Tarkanian, the namesake grandson of the famed basketball coach, complained of pain in his legs and was taken to University Medical Center at 4 a.m. Friday.

The boy is undergoing testing, including a CT scan and MRI but is showing signs of improvement.

The family said the boy has never had health issues and is conscious and moving better since the stroke.

His parents are Danny, a former Republican congressional candidate, and Amy Tarkanian, a political commentator and former Nevada GOP chairwoman. Grandmother Lois Tarkanian is a Las Vegas city councilwoman.

The elder Jerry Tarkanian, who led the 1990 UNLV team to a national title, died in February.

Amy Tarkanian tweeted early this morning that her son was getting a CT scan and was having trouble answering questions. The left side of his body was not moving, she said.

“I’m just dying inside,” she later posted.
