Flamingo Road is going to get smoother and prettier. Transportation officials say when construction is done in 18 months on the 14-mile stretch, one of the most heavily trafficked in the valley, it will be safer and easier to navigate for motorists, pedestrians, bus riders and bicyclists. But until then, get ready for some pain in the form of orange cones and traffic jams. Here’s what you should know as construction gets underway this week:

What changes are coming?

Better for buses

The biggest changes coming to Flamingo Road will affect buses, which pick up 12,000 riders along the corridor each day.

Shoulders that run in both directions currently are used for right turns only. But workers will convert them into dedicated bus and bicycle lanes that will help get buses out of the way of motorists, allow buses to move more smoothly through the corridor and keep routes on time.

New bus stops

More than 100 new bus stops will be built featuring a new design that’s more spacious and will better protect riders from the summer sun and gusty desert winds.

The stops also will be moved back as far as possible from the road, providing a safer experience for riders.

Prettier medians

Flamingo’s center strips will get new, desert-friendly landscaping to make people’s commutes more aesthetically pleasing.

Smoother roads

Seven miles of the road will be resurfaced and restriped, maintenance that will make the road look better and provide for a less bumpy ride.

The Clark County Flood Reclamation District also will take advantage of the torn-up roads to improve sewers that run beneath.

Restricted left turns

One of the biggest changes for motorists will be the restriction of left turns from driveways in many locations.

Drivers still will be able to turn left from the road into parking lots and shopping centers, but returning to the road will require a right turn, then a U-turn.

New crosswalks

Several crosswalks will be added, along with a new stop light just easy of Paradise Road, to make it safer for pedestrians crossing Flamingo Road.

The crosswalks will be placed in areas where there’s a long distance between existing stoplights and a large number of pedestrians who jaywalk.
