Committee rejects expenditures requested by state treasurer

CARSON CITY — State Treasurer Dan Schwartz, who earlier criticized the budget of Gov. Brian Sandoval, got some rough treatment today by the Senate Finance Committee.

The committee rejected requests by Schwartz to hire a public information officer and to expand his Las Vegas office.

The motions to deny the items were made by Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson, R-Las Vegas, who denounced Schwartz for challenging the governor.

Schwartz wanted $50,000 to remodel and expand his Las Vegas office and $114,072 over the next two years to hire a public information officer to, among other things, write speeches and answer questions from the public.

Committee Chairman Ben Kieckhefer, R-Reno, said he did not see any justification from Schwartz for the new position.
