NV Energy should embrace roof solar

Regarding the article “Solar industry squares off with Buffett and NV Energy” (Las Vegas Sun, April 11):

I moved to Las Vegas for the sun and free enterprise spirit that was evident. I am saddened to see how the taxi/Uber and NV Energy/solar roof debates are shaping up. These two entrenched powers, taxis and NV Energy, are out to crush the more efficient, customer-friendly Uber and solar roof industries.

For the past several years, NV Energy has offered incentives to people who install solar roofs. Suddenly, now that the solar industry has flowered and is employing thousands, NV Energy wants to stop them in their tracks. Residents should be outraged.

Clearly, every residence cannot have a solar roof. But those who can offer a benefit to NV Energy. Namely, solar roofs can produce sufficient kilowatt-hours in the summer months to save the valley from brownouts by not needing NV Energy in the heat of the day. If NV Energy would encourage more solar roofs rather than trying to crush them, it could avoid putting up more new solar farms. In this way, NV Energy would have less infrastructure to install and maintain. After all, where is it stated that NV Energy must be a growth company? They can earn their 9 percent a year by maintaining what they have plus new housing/businesses that come online.

Solar roofs provide a portion of the energy for their homes but still must use NV Energy power. NV Energy should join hands with the solar roof owners to provide sufficient, stable energy for all of us.
