Debate between solar groups, NV Energy heats up with protest

CARSON CITY — Advocates for rooftop solar installations plan to rally outside NV Energy headquarters to protest a state cap on how many solar customers can sell energy back to the utility.

The rally scheduled Wednesday in Las Vegas is being promoted by the conservative group TUSK, whose name is an acronym for Tell Utilities Solar won't be Killed.

The group is concerned about a 3 percent Nevada cap on net metering, which allows people who have solar installations at their homes to send excess energy back to the utility company for bill credit.

NV Energy says the practice could benefit solar users at the expense of traditional customers, although solar installers dispute that claim.

Parties are considering whether to raise the cap and amend it to a bill pending in the Legislature.
