CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval’s plan to provide school breakfast to more students of low-income families was approved today by the Senate Finance Committee.
The committee already approved providing $1 million a year to the state Department of Agriculture to start the program.
The Breakfast After the Bell program requires public schools with large populations of low-income students to provide breakfast after instruction begins.
The agriculture department will monitor the schools and make a report on the effectiveness of the program.
Sen. Pete Goicoechea, R-Eureka, said the program could bring an additional $2 million a year from the federal government.
The bill now goes to the Senate floor.
