A runway at the Las Vegas airport closed since October as part of a $67 million resurfacing project has been reopened ahead of schedule, according to the Clark County Department of Aviation.

The first phase of construction on runway 7L/25R at McCarran International Airport was finished just in time for the peak summer travel season, officials said. The runway is the longest at McCarran and handles about a third of the airport’s yearly traffic,.

“We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we work to not only maintain, but improve our airport. McCarran is one of the most important economic assets in Southern Nevada and an essential part of our hospitality and tourism industry,” Clark County Director of Aviation Rosemary A. Vassiliadis said.

The second and final phase of the project will begin in late October and will focus on the western half of the runway. The project should be completed in late April or early May 2016, officials said.

Grants from the FAA, as well as funds generated by the airport, financed the project, which is creating about 250 construction jobs over the course of its two phases, officials said.
