Presidential candidates invited to conference of Latino policymakers in Las Vegas

More than 1,200 Hispanic policymakers are expected to descend on the Las Vegas Strip in June for a meeting to discuss next year’s presidential election.

The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, a large and influential political organization based in Los Angeles, has invited candidates vying for the White House to address its membership at its annual conference. The group will hold the three-day gathering beginning June 17 at the Aria.

“The road to the White House in 2016 runs through the Latino community,” the group’s executive director wrote in a prepared statement. “We expect the nation’s presidential candidates to join us in Las Vegas to address the nation’s Latino officials and the most pressing issues facing the Latino community today.”

Speakers at previous conferences have included President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio.

Conference panels will include discussions on immigration reform, the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act and racial tension among law enforcement and the communities they serve. The group also will get an overview of Nevada’s political leadership and the role of Latinos in the upcoming presidential election.
