Updated Thursday, April 23, 2015 | 9:26 p.m.

A 19-year-old man died after the car he was driving struck a light pole in the west valley this afternoon, Metro Police said.

Officers were called about 2 p.m. to the scene of an accident with injury on West Charleston Boulevard west of Apple Drive, near South Hualapai Way, police said.

The Las Vegas teen was driving a 1992 BMW 318i east on West Charleston Boulevard at a high speed and lost control, causing the car to rotate and strike the pole on the center median, police said.

The pole hit the passenger side, and the force of the hit caused the car to split, police said.

The teen was pronounced dead on scene.

His identity, as well as the official cause and manner of his death, will be released by the Clark County Coroner's Office.

This is the 35th traffic death in Metro's jurisdiction this year, police said.

Traffic on Charleston Boulevard was being restricted, Officer Larry Hadfield said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
