Coffee lovers in the valley flocked to Starbucks for free drinks this afternoon, the result of register outages at stores in the United States and Canada.

The outage was caused by "a failure during a daily system refresh," according to a statement, and shut registers down across the country, leading many stores to offer customers free drinks and pastries.

"We are actively working to resolve the outage and our stores will remain open and continue to serve our customers," Starbucks said in the statement.

The Starbucks location at 8164 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Suite 100, was experiencing heavy traffic and advised its customers to order up to a grande size coffee, an employee said.

At the Starbucks at 1500 N. Green Valley Parkway, Suite 150, an employee advised customers they were able to order up to a grande size and were giving away some pastries.

The outage is also affecting Evolution Fresh and Teavana stores, the statement said.
