Bill would set stage for skill-based gaming machines

CARSON CITY — Nevada needs to attract younger gamblers and installing video game-like gambling devices may be the answer, the Assembly Judiciary Committee was told today.

Samuel McMullen, representing the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers, said Nevada is faces competition from casinos across the U.S.

“The newest generation wants new experiences,” said McMullen, who advocated passage SB 9, which would permit gaming officials to establish regulations to oversee these new types of games that involve player skill. Traditional slot machines, he said, are losing their appeal.

Another bill would allow statewide charitable lotteries and give state regulators more control over “club venues” at casinos. The Gaming Control Board wants the authority to license the clubs and their employees.

The committee will vote later on the bills, which did not encounter any opposition.
