Updated Wednesday, April 29, 2015 | 5:22 p.m.

One person was shot when patrol officers responding to a report of a suspicious person found a burglary in progress several miles west of the Strip, Metro Police said.

Sgt. John Sheahan said officers interrupted the break-in at a home on Blue Jay Way before the shooting a shortly before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. It was not immediately clear if the person police shot had a weapon.

A K-9 officer responded to the call and arrived at the home. Upon arrival, the officer did not see the suspect, but as he approached the home he saw that the door was open and the suspect was inside, police said. A confrontation occurred between the suspect and officer and the officer shot the suspect once with his handgun, according to police.

The shooting happened in a neighborhood near Jones and Oakey boulevards, not far from the College of Southern Nevada, Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital and the campus of the Opportunity Village charity.

The subject was taken to University Medical Center and later identified as 19-year-old Richard Powell. An investigation found a handgun on the floor of the residence, police said.

Powell is at the hospital in stable condition.

No officers were injured, police said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
