Committee OKs extra officers at youth correctional center

CARSON CITY — A joint budget subcommittee voted today to add six officers to the staff when the Summit View Youth Correctional Center in Las Vegas reopens in September.

Nevada Assembly Minority Leader Marilyn Kirkpatrick said the extra correctional officers will help ensure the safety of the staff and young people at the facility.

State Sen. Maggie Carlton, D-Las Vegas, said the six officers are the “bare minimum” to protect the staff and youth.

Gov. Brian Sandoval originally recommended spending $11.6 million over the next two years to operate Summit View and contract out for educational, medical and rehabilitation services. That budget will increase to more than $14 million with additional expenses.

Before it closed, the facility was operated by the non-profit group Rite of Passage, but the state was not satisfied with the operation.

The subcommittee’s recommendation is expected to be approved by the full Senate Finance and Assembly Ways and Means committees.

The subcommittee also approved more than $900,000 over the biennium to make repairs on such things as air conditioners and security doors.
