A 37-year-old bicyclist was critically injured this morning after being hit by a car on the Strip near Treasure Island, halting southbound traffic in the area for several hours, according to Metro Police.

The accident happened about 8 a.m. in the 3300 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South, south of Spring Mountain Road, police said.

Two cyclists were riding south on Las Vegas Boulevard South when the front of a 1998 Ford Mustang hit the rear of the bike being ridden by Las Vegas resident Matthew Hunt, police said.

Hunt and his bike hit the ground, and he was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, police said.

The other cyclist was not hit, and the 23-year-old woman driving the Mustang was not injured, police said. The driver remained on scene.

The Strip was closed southbound at Spring Mountain until about 12:50 p.m., according to the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada.
