Officers shot and killed a man who jumped from a closet and lunged at them with a sharp object as they investigated a report of a broken window, according to Metro Police.

A male resident in the 6900 block of Berkshire Place called police about 6:15 a.m. to report a broken window and identified a neighbor as a possible suspect, Metro Capt. Matt McCarthy said.

Two officers went to the neighbor’s home about 9 a.m. and were allowed inside by the homeowner to search, McCarthy said. When they opened a closet door, the man jumped out and lunged at them, he said.

Both officers opened fire with their handguns, McCarthy said. The man was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

McCarthy said police had interacted with the suspect in the past.

Police did not indicate what the relationship was between the homeowner and the shooting victim.

This is the seventh Metro Police officer-involved shooting reported this year.

The department will release the names of the officers involved after 48 hours, and the identity of the suspect will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office once next of kin has been notified.
