Activists file petition seeking to repeal entire Nevada tax package

CARSON CITY — Conservative activists have filed a petition seeking to repeal the entire $1.1 billion tax package that Nevada lawmakers passed this spring.

Anti-tax activist Chuck Muth said Monday that he filed paperwork with the Secretary of State's Office on Monday seeking the ballot measure. The petition includes the names of more than 800 persons.

Richard Hy, deputy secretary for elections, said the petitioners must gather 55,234 signatures of registered voters by June 21, 2016, to qualify it for the November election ballot. There must be 13,809 signers in each of the four congressional districts.

Hy said those who want to challenge the petition must file a suit in District Court in Carson City by Aug. 31.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has already announced his opposition to the repeal, arguing that most of the money went to the public school system, which has been ranked at or near the bottom of states nationally.

Opponents say Republicans went against conservative principles in approving the deal.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
