letters to the editor:

Government must regulate unreasonably high gasoline prices

Despite oil prices falling to six-month lows, prices at the pump haven’t followed.

The big-oil excuse back in March, when prices started climbing, was the switch to the summer blend. By May, when prices had gone up 21 consecutive days, they blamed it on a refinery explosion and some strikes.

The average person has enough sense to realize he or she is simply getting gouged. A consumer-watchdog report in May backs up that feeling: visit bit.ly/1N7Gafl. The report makes it clear the proof is in the profits and calls for government intervention to protect consumers.

When you consider U.S. crude is down more than 20 percent in July alone and that my local station has been sitting stubbornly at $3.09 a gallon for gasoline for weeks, government intervention can’t get here quickly enough. I won’t be holding my breath, though.
