A strong area of high pressure moving in from New Mexico brought high temperatures Saturday and triggered an excessive heat warning Sunday through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat warning was initially in effect from noon Sunday through 8 p.m. Monday, but it appears the near record-high temperatures in the valley will continue through 8 p.m. Wednesday, the Weather Service said.

Also according to the Weather Service:

The valley will feel relief from the heat on Thursday and Friday, when temperatures will fall about 3 to 5 degrees each day.

Many areas throughout the valley are expected to see near-record-high temperatures through Wednesday. The area near McCarran International Airport, which usually sees temperatures around 102 degrees this time of year, will be 108 to 110 through Wednesday. Lake Mead, which is usually around 99 this time of year, will see temperatures ranging from 109 to 113.

Sunday's high was expect to be near 110 degrees with a light, southwesterly wind reaching 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. By the evening, temperatures should fall to around 85 degrees, with wind gusts reaching up to 20 mph.

Some Henderson residents returned home Saturday after a storm last week caused a power outage that displaced many.

According to the city:

As of 1:45 p.m. Saturday, 44 Henderson homes and businesses were still without power; it was set to be restored later Saturday.

The American Red Cross opened two emergency shelters Thursday evening to house the displaced residents.

About 40 people stayed at the Heritage Senior Facility at 300 S. Racetrack Road, which was set to close at 5 p.m. Saturday. Nine people stayed at the Downtown Recreation Center at 105 W. Basic Road, which closed at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The city animal shelter housed four dogs, two cats and two birds during the storm.
