Juan Felipe Herrera, the newly appointed United States poet laureate, reads one of his poems before the California State Senate on July 6 in Sacramento.

The first Hispanic poet laureate of the United States is making a visit to Las Vegas for a free public reading at a new 250-seat theater at the Nevada State College in Henderson.

Clark County Poet Laureate Bruce Isaacson says the 7 p.m. appearance next Wednesday by Juan Felipe Herrera will mark Herrera's first visit to Nevada since he was named in June by the Library of Congress as poet laureate.

Herrera is the son of migrant California farmworkers. He earned his master's degree at the Iowa Writers' Workshop and is author of 28 books of poetry, novels for young adults and collections for children.

His poetry books include "Half the World in Light" and "187 Reasons Mexicanos Can't Cross the Border."

The reading is co-sponsored by Nevada State College.
