A fire broke out Saturday, July 25, 2015, at the Cosmopolitan. The blaze was at the Bamboo Pool on the casino’s rooftop.

Investigation into the cause of the July pool deck fire was inconclusive, the Clark County Fire Department reported.

Investigators also could not pinpoint the ignition point of the July 25 fire or the first item that ignited, the department said. However, the investigation ruled out electrical issues as a cause.

“Although improperly discarded cigarettes were observed on the pool deck, we cannot prove beyond an acceptable level of certainty that cigarettes were the cause, therefore this fire must be classified as undetermined,” said Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell.

According to Clark County Officials, the fire caused an estimate of $2 million in damage to the 14th floor of the outdoor pool deck area at the Bamboo Pool. Most of the damage was confined to the exterior areas of the building, including artificial landscaping, patio furniture and cabanas. One lanai suite located on the 14th floor of the hotel sustained interior smoke damage, while others only received water damage.

Clark County officials obtained samples of artificial trees that burned for laboratory analysis to determine the makeup of the material. However, results are not expected to come back for several weeks.

“Depending on what the analysis shows, we will be able to determine whether we need to work with the resort industry to advise any recommendations regarding the use of these materials or propose any changes to codes governing their use,” said Clark County Building Official Ron Lynn, who oversees the Department of Building and Fire Prevention.
