Light rain falls in valley; chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday

Updated Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015 | 6 p.m.

Isolated showers hit the Las Vegas Valley today, and storm watchers may still have a chance to see thunderstorms this week before it's expected to heat up, according to the National Weather Service.

Less than 0.01 inch of rain was reported in the west valley this morning near Fort Apache Road and Sahara Avenue and at McCarran International Airport this afternoon, according to weather service meteorologist John Adair.

The monsoon season moisture in the air means there's a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms through Thursday with partly cloudy skies, he said.

Wednesday, especially, will provide a good opportunity for thunderstorms to hit the valley, he said.

The air should dry out Friday, he said.

Storms in Arizona are expected to send blowing dust into the valley tonight, and winds may reach 20 to 30 mph this evening, especially in the east valley, he said.

The official high temperature so far today was 97 degrees, and a low of 80 degrees is predicted tonight.

Based on data from past years, the normal high temperature for today's date is 101 degrees and the normal low is 78 degrees, Adair said.

A high of 100 degrees is in the forecast Wednesday with temperatures expected to heat up through Friday.
