It’s still August and they’ve played just one game.

But the Bishop Gorman Gaels have positioned themselves to win another mythical high school championship, being ranked at No. 1 in two national polls today after a wild initial week of games.

Gorman, ranked No. 3 in the preseason by USA Today, opened Saturday with a convincing 35-14 victory against Chandler of Arizona. With No.1 De La Salle and No. 2 Miami Central each being upset last week, Gorman was elevated to No. 1 in the rankings by USA Today and MaxPreps.

But the Gaels' time atop the rankings could be short. The meat of their schedule — Friday in a hostile environment at Bingham (Utah) and the following week at Seattle-area power Bellevue — could determine the team's national championship fate.

If six-time defending state champion Gorman can survive with a 3-0 record, the remainder of the games against national opponents are at home and more manageable.
