Man dies after being pulled from smoke-filled apartment

Updated Monday, Dec. 7, 2015 | 12:47 p.m.

A man pulled unresponsive from a smoke-filled apartment Sunday night and taken to an area hospital has died, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

The fire was reported about 11 p.m. at the Washington Plaza Apartments in the 2100 block of Washington Avenue. Firefighters forced their way into an apartment on the ground floor and extinguished a small fire in a closet, officials said.

The fire created dense smoke that filled the apartment, and as firefighters searched the apartment, they found a man who was unresponsive, officials said. They took him outside and performed CPR, before he was transported to University Medical Center, officials said.

He apparently died of smoke inhalation, officials said. His name has not been released.

The cause of the fire, which did about $5,000 damage, is under investigation.

No other apartments were damaged, officials said.
