Teachers union, School District reach tentative contract agreement

A monthslong standoff over a new employment contract for Clark County school teachers could be coming to an end.

The teachers union and the Clark County School District confirmed today that they have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract for the district’s roughly 18,000 teachers.

Few details, however, were available as to what the new contract looks like.

Neither the district nor the Clark County Education Association have released specifics about the agreement or said whether teachers would be receiving salary increases.

A portion of the contract centered on the district’s recent decision to increase its health care contribution is up for approval by the School Board on Thursday, though teachers might have to wait another week for details about the full agreement.

The teacher’s union said in an announcement to its members today that details of the contract would be revealed and put to a member vote on Dec. 19.

The announcement is significant because, as recently as late October, both parties seemed destined to go arbitration after weeks of negotiations failed to go anywhere.

The dispute started in June after the district said it couldn’t honor scheduled salary increases because of a $67 million budget shortfall.

Union leaders demanded a new $70 million contract that would have increased teacher salaries across the board.
