Suspected electrical fire at house causes $100,000 damage

A suspected electrical fire in the attic of a house this morning caused an estimated $100,000 damage, but two residents escaped without injury, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

The fire was reported about 7:15 a.m. at the single-story house in the 2200 block of Mohawk Street, in the area of Sahara Avenue and Lindell Road.

Firefighters from Las Vegas and Clark County responded and had the fire under control in less than 10 minutes, officials said. Damage was confined mainly to the attic and roof.

The two people who live at the house told investigators they found the circuit breaker off to a refrigerator in the garage early in the morning, officials said. When they reset the breaker, there was a loud pop and sparks inside the breaker box, officials said.

They shut off the breaker, but a short time later they noticed smoke outside, and the smoke alarms in the house sounded, officials said.

The Clark County Fire Department is investigating the cause of the blaze, which investigators believe started in the attic and was electrical in nature, officials said.

The American Red Cross was assisting the residents.
