Chance of more wind, rain in valley over weekend

Updated Friday, Dec. 11, 2015 | 10:30 p.m.

Rain fell and winds blew into the Las Vegas Valley on Friday afternoon, a potential preview of this weekend's weather, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain started falling about 1 p.m. Friday mainly on the north and east sides of U.S. 95, National Weather Service meteorologist Clay Morgan said.

About 0.01 inch of rain was measured at McCarran International Airport, though up to 0.1 inch was measured in other areas, especially in the north and northeast valley, meteorologist Barry Pierce said.

There were a few lightning strikes in the valley, and light snow fell on Mount Charleston, Pierce said.

The high temperature reached 61 degrees, and sustained winds of 10 to 20 mph were accompanied by gusts of about 30 mph, he said.

Small ice pellets fell in the Summerlin area near Vegas and Durango drives, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

Saturday should be less windy with a high of 55 degrees, dropping to 39 at night.

Sunday’s high is projected at 58 degrees, and there's a 40 percent chance of rain Sunday night. Winds are expected to pick up Sunday with sustained speeds of 25 to 35 mph, and gusts could reach up to 50 mph, Pierce said.

Monday’s temperature is expected to top out at 53 degrees. Meteorologists are expecting snow could drop as low as 4,000 feet on Mount Charleston, Pierce said.
