letters to the editor:

PUC shouldn’t hurt solar users

The Nevada PUC is considering changing its rate structure to shift costs to solar energy users, making solar energy more expensive than old-style electricity. The state-funded independent study by E3 demonstrated that this does not make economic sense in Nevada.

When Arizona made similar changes in its rate structure, those changes drove 90 percent of solar energy companies out of business. Nevada stands to lose 6,000 jobs held by solar energy workers, not to mention the blow this will deal to Tonopah’s economy with its new solar plant. As bishop of the Episcopal churches in Nevada, I know our churches installed solar panels expecting lower power bills, but they will now pay higher power bills. This penalizes them for doing the right thing and takes away resources we use to feed the homeless, support public schools, mentor youth and support the community in multiple ways. Nevadans will lose big time if the PUC does an about face on solar — not to mention the long-term effect on our climate.
