Appalachian State minus-7.5 vs. Ohio: $440 to win $400

Ohio played only one team better than Appalachian State, according to Football Outsiders’ F/+ ratings, all season. That was Bowling Green, which dominated in a 62-24 victory.

Another blowout tonight in Montgomery, Ala., wouldn’t be surprising. Appalachian State closed the season poorly, failing to cover in four of five games, but it’s produced at a spectacular clip over the year as a whole.

The Mountaineers are gaining 6.6 yards per play with playmakers — including quarterback Taylor Lamb, running back Marcus Cox and wide receiver Simms McElfresh — all over the field. Ohio’s defense, in the nation’s bottom half surrendering 5.7 yards per play, doesn’t look cut out for the challenge.

Appalachian State also appears to hold the ever-important motivational edge. The Mountaineers are playing in their first-ever bowl game and boasts a team loaded with seniors.

The Bobcats are more likely to take the opportunity for granted. Even if they put forth their best performance, they might not be able to beat Appalachian State.

The Mountaineers are surely going to play to their peak.
