Man named in slaying during Strip fight-night events

LAS VEGAS — A man awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in an unrelated robbery case will face a murder charge in the death of a 27-year-old man during a fight-night confrontation last May outside a Las Vegas Strip resort, authorities said.

DeAngelo Mathews, 23, was being held Thursday at the Clark County jail in Las Vegas pending an initial court appearance in the May 3 death of DaShawn Antwon-Fouch Hawkins.

Correcting an earlier report, the Clark County coroner said Hawkins was from Columbus, Ohio. The coroner previously reported that he lived in San Jose, California.

It wasn't immediately clear if Mathews had a lawyer on the murder charge. Attorney Andrew Flahive represents him in the robbery case, in which he pleaded guilty in November and awaits sentencing Jan. 12. Flahive said he didn't know who represents Mathews in the new case.

Hawkins died of a head injury several hours after he was knocked unconscious and fell to the sidewalk in a 4:20 a.m. fight in the valet area of the Paris Las Vegas hotel-casino, according to police and coroner reports.

The slaying was one of several incidents that marred a busy night of events after Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated Manny Pacquiao late May 2 in a welterweight championship fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Hawkins' slaying occurred hours after a person was wounded in an after-midnight shooting near the Tropicana resort. Las Vegas police reported 12 felony and 86 misdemeanor arrests during fight weekend. Sixty-four other people received citations for misdemeanors or other infractions.

Police later released grainy security camera images showing dozens of people on Las Vegas Boulevard sidewalks while a red SUV with a sun roof and a white Chevrolet Impala exit the Paris Las Vegas casino valet area. Investigators said at the time they wanted to talk with a man who was driving the SUV with a female passenger, and a woman who was driving the Chevrolet.
