Utility fights to hurt its customers

My name is Caitlin. I’m a senior at West Tech High School in Las Vegas, and I am concerned about Nevadans losing the benefits of rooftop solar. I testified before the Public Utilities Commission in support of net metering in November, and I write to reiterate my beliefs.

So far, the use of solar panels has helped Nevada environmentally by lowering carbon emissions, economically by creating jobs, and health-wise by reducing air pollution. So why is NV Energy trying to block the progression of rooftop solar by eliminating fair net-metering policies that do so much for us?

We cannot ignore that solar panels save thousands of gallons of water every year compared with water-intensive utility power. We cannot ignore that fossil fuels harm breathing, especially considering that asthma is the No. 1 reason students miss school. And we cannot ignore that NV Energy wants to keep a monopoly on our power.

We have a choice, and we need to use our power of choice. Don’t let the power companies take away our choice of having solar panels. Don’t let the power companies take away the 6,000 jobs solar energy produces. Don’t let the power companies take away the better future we should have. Make the right choice, because we can make a difference in what our future becomes.
