Brighter LED street lamps going up along Interstate 15

Driving along Interstate 15 will be brighter in 2016.

The Nevada Department of Transportation announced today it will be making $1.2 million in lighting improvements along a 35-mile stretch of the freeway from Jean to the U.S. 95 interchange — also known as the “Spaghetti Bowl.”

Acme Electric will be replacing 550 high-pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures with light-emitting diode (LED) lamps.

“Switching light fixtures will result in better, more efficient energy usage and reduced maintenance costs,” NDOT spokesman Tony Illia said in a news release. “The new fixtures also produce brighter and clearer lighting for improved motorist visibility.”

The improvements are scheduled to begin in January and should be completed by spring. The work will be done at night to keep the impact on traffic to a minimum.

NDOT says motorists should use caution in the work zone and heed construction signs.
