Man arrested in slaying of 28-year-old woman in North Las Vegas

A man was arrested in Southern California last week in the shooting death of a 28-year-old Las Vegas woman earlier this month, according to North Las Vegas Police.

Vernon Newson Jr., 32, was arrested Dec. 22 by the Claremont Police Department on a warrant and faces counts of murder and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, according to North Las Vegas Police and Los Angeles County inmate records.

North Las Vegas Police were called to a report of a shooting about 10:30 p.m. Dec. 13 near the Interstate 15 on-ramp at Lamb Boulevard, police said.

Witnesses told police the woman, identified by the Clark County Coroner’s Office as Anshanette Unique McNeil, and the suspect were in the same vehicle and both got out, according to North Las Vegas Police.

McNeil was shot multiple times and was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where she died, police said.

Newson is scheduled to appear 8:30 a.m. Jan. 11 in Los Angeles Municipal Court, inmate records show.

He is awaiting extradition and is being held without bail at the North County Correctional Facility in L.A. County, according to inmate records and North Las Vegas Police.
