Nevada taxable sales up 5.5 percent in October

CARSON CITY — Taxable sales, one indicator of the Nevada economy, rose by 5.5 percent in October.

The Nevada Department of Taxation reported Monday that taxable sales increased to $4.3 billion, a gain of $215 million from October 2014. It was the 58th straight monthly increase in sales.

Storey County, where a Tesla battery plant is being built, posted a 78.6 percent gain, the biggest in the state.

Clark County merchants posted a 5.5 percent increase to $3.1 billion. Washoe County rose 10.4 percent to $621.1 million.

But nine of the state’s 17 counties had lower sales than a year ago. Sales slumped 20.9 percent in White Pine County and 20.8 percent in Lincoln County.

Statewide, furniture sales increased 34 percent from October 2014. Food and drink sales increased 8.1 percent.

In Clark County, furniture sales were up 35.2 percent, electronics sales rose 11.2 percent and car sales increased by 4.4 percent.

Business in bars and restaurants in Clark County rose 7.2 percent, and sales of building supplies gained 9.6 percent.

Clothing sales were down 5.9 percent in sales of general merchandise were off 1.8 percent.
