letters to the editor:

Don’t send troops to Middle East

The Republican debates show almost unanimity in proposing overwhelming military force to solve the problems in the Middle East conflicts.

What is never mentioned is the root cause of many of these conflicts, namely the conflict between Sunnis and Shia factions. This religious conflict has been going on for more than a thousand years and was exasperated by the arbitrary country boundaries drawn after World War I. It seems that regardless of any military success the Western powers may achieve, it will probably take hundreds or thousand of years before real peace could be achieved. So it makes little sense to risk American lives and get sucked into wars that may never end. While I agree something must be done to stop radical extremists from attacking the West, it must be done in away that doesn’t involve “boots on the ground.”
