Court upholds conviction in slaying of Olympic boxer

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court has upheld the first-degree murder conviction of Roger Randolph, who shot a former Olympic champion boxer in Las Vegas after an argument over gambling.

The court Friday rejected 10 claims by Randolph, including that there was insufficient evidence and that the judge made errors at his 2012 trial.

Randolph was sentenced to consecutive terms of 20 years to life and six to 16 years in the slaying of Rhoshii Wells in 2008.

Defense attorneys maintained Rogers should have been declared mentally retarded and that there was no evidence the killing was premeditated, according to court documents.

Wells was shot in the torso Aug. 11, 2008, at an apartment complex in the 500 block of North Lamb Boulevard, according to Metro Police.

Wells, a father of five children, had won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He died hours after being taken to University Medical Center.
