Low bid of $82.9 million submitted for Boulder City bypass work

CARSON CITY — A North Dakota firm has submitted the apparent low bid of $82.9 million to build 2.5 miles in the first phase of the Boulder City bypass.

Fisher Sand and Gravel Co. of Dickerson, N.D., was the lowest bider of four companies that submitted proposals to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

The job calls for construction of the bypass from Silverline Road to Foothill Drive. When completed, transportation officials said, the four-lane highway will divert traffic that now goes through downtown Boulder City.

The state Transportation Board is expected to vote Monday on the contract award.

The second-lowest bidder was Las Vegas Paving Corp. at $83.5 million.

Las Vegas Paving was actually the lowest bidder — $80 million — for using an asphalt base on the road. But $3.5 million was added to its bid for a concrete road surface.

Transportation officials said concrete would mean less maintenance.

Other bidders were S.A. Healy Co. of Henderson at $88.5 million and Road and Highway Builders of Reno at $92.4 million.

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada will finance construction of the second section of the bypass.
