Union rep says state workers deserve a raise

CARSON CITY — A union representative complained to the Senate Finance Committee today that state workers are being shortchanged and asked lawmakers to consider a raise of up to 5 percent.

Kevin Ranft, regional vice president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Workers Local 4041, said workers have not seen a cost of living increase in at least the last five or six years.

He asked the committee to conduct a study to see how much it would cost to raise pay by either 2, 3 or 5 percent.

“State employees are not respected,” Ranft said. “It’s sad to see how they are taken care of.”

Gov. Brian Sandoval did not include any money in his budget for a cost of living increase. But he recommend eliminating six furlough days state workers are required to take.

Ranft said there has been an increase in turnover in state employment because of the stagnant wages.

The committee did not take any action on Ranft’s request for a salary study.
