Metro Police

The intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard was closed as Metro Police investigated a double-rollover, fatal car accident on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015.

One person is in custody after a nine-car wreck with a fatality and multiple injuries occurred Friday afternoon at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard.

The double-rollover crash was reported about 3:30 p.m., police said.

A speeding 2012 Dodge Challenger was eastbound on Cheyenne Avenue and failed to slow down while approaching a red light at Jones Boulevard, police said.

The Dodge struck the front of a 1993 Ford Crown Victoria that was traveling south through the intersection with a green light, police said. The Dodge then struck the left side of a 2000 Nissan Xterra that was traveling north through the intersection with a green light.

This caused the Dodge and Nissan to strike a 2000 Toyota Rav4 that was northbound on Jones Boulevard. The impact from the Dodge caused the Toyota and Nissan to roll over, police said.

The other five cars involved were stopped at a red light on westbound Cheyenne Avenue, police said. Those cars were damaged by the Dodge, Nissan and Toyota as they came to a stop.

The driver of the Nissan, a 56-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victims were taken to a hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious, police said.

The driver of the Dodge was booked in absentia and is in police custody at a local hospital, police said.

This is the 11th traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
