letter to the editor:

Taxes aren’t answer for education woes

Throwing tax dollars at education will do little toward improvement. More kids will be educated, but their scores won’t improve. Nothing will change except we will have more schools and taxes.

Broken homes are the biggest problem. I went to parochial school (49 kids in a class). I achieved aC- average with three other students; the rest were B students or better.

Why? I was raised by a single mom, I did what I wanted when I wanted while she was at work. All I wanted to do was play ball. The other kids came from two-parent homes with constant supervision. The academia was there if you applied yourself, same as today.

This is the greatest state in the country for two young people to make over $100,000 a year in the service industry. So why not get married and have two kids? Now fast forward five years — the mother has both kids and the husband lost his good job and won’t pay child support.

Only 27 percent of jobs require an associate degree or higher. UNLV gets untold endowments every year, but tuition still rises. Computers and technology have put millions out of work. Gov. Brian Sandoval’s dreams won’t be realized and the cost of living will rise again.
